Pack Your Bags — We’re Headed to Tokyo!

 Hello My Dear Readers !

Welcome back to my blog page.

As you see from the title, we are getting out of our usual and boring classrooms and heading to a complete different country... through Technology!

Today, I want to talk about AR and VR technology a little. Augmented Reality (AR) enables us to add digital elemants such as, images, texts or 3D objects. AR gives us a virtual reality through bunch of technological devices without replacing physical environment completly. We can think of many examples in real life, such as using navigations to find a location, or posting pictures with instagram filters.

On the other hand, Virtual Reality (VR) is a technology that creates a total digital environment and places user in that environment. This can be very interactive, it allows users freedom, such as looking around, moving themselves, or manipulate objects as they like. It is a very good application to the classroom because it is authentic and it immerses students' atttention and make them curious about the lesson and activities.

However, there might be serious problems to apply this in a classroom. The internet connection might be the first problem in the class. Besides, there might be not enough equipments to apply these technologies to each classroom throughout the Turkish traditional classrooms.

For our project, we designed  a "Virtual Tokyo Tour" for A2-level high school preparatory students. Our task guides students through some landmarks and a museum and a cultural aspect of Tokyo City through VR technologies. Students are to use handouts and QR codes to access VR technologies. Lastly, it was a group work and me and my partners worked equally which made the process of preparing an activity a lot easier. For me, the only problem was to prepare the questions on the worksheet. Finding right and effective questions took some time but overall it was a productive study and I would gladly apply it to my classrooms once I get the chance and the equipments.

To create materials, we used YouTube for 360 videos and Google Arts & Culture for the virtual museum tour. We also used QR codes in the worksheet to reach the digital content.
