An AI-enhanced Corpus-Based Teaching Material... But, what do we mean ??
Hello my dear readers,
I had a very enjoyable group project and wanted to share it with you all!!
In this assignment, me and my friends created an AI-enhanced, corpus-based teaching material according to the ASSURE model. Our objective was to teach modal verbs must and have to and it was to direct turkish EFL high school students to discover functional differences between these two items through self-teaching and evaluating. We designed our material around Ma et al.'s design principles, which means our class session moves from exploration to induction and then to output in the classroom environment.
We initially used SKELL for the worksheet we prepared because its interface is quite friendly and understandable for students. On the first page, we asked students to look up the words must and have to themselves and find which tense they refer to. On the next page, they were expected to find which functions these expressions correspond to and categorize them. These exercises enabled them to manage their own language learning process. Towards the end, we asked students to use the prompts given on the paper, write them into the Chat GPT, examine the sentence examples, then construct their own utterances related to the topic covered within the lesson and have them checked by the AI, and finally, make corrections based on this feedback.
Our designing process was equally divided so I had fun preparing our material. However, the main challenge for me was the fact that it was the first time I prepared a lesson plan based on a model, especially ASSURE model which I learned very recently. So I had to check and look over our paper in order to eliminate unnecessary details and make it a good and a usefull plan. Eventually, it took more time to upload it than any other lesson plan assignment I have had until now.
When it comes to its applicability, I believe it is quite difficult to introduce it and apply it within the classroom. There will always be students who will feel left behind because they are foreign to technology and AI tools. Besides, in our country students are not used to managing their own learning, let alone discovering language patterns through various tools, so I believe it will be challenging to get them used to this type of lecturing.
However, as long as we consider these problems and solve them then this lesson plan might be applicable and eventually very beneficial to our sweet students.
