An AI-enhanced Corpus-Based Teaching Material... But, what do we mean ??

Hello my dear readers,  I had a very enjoyable group project and wanted to share it with you all!!       In this assignment, me and my friends created an AI-enhanced, corpus-based teaching material according to the ASSURE model. Our objective was to teach modal verbs must and have to and it was to direct turkish EFL high school students to discover functional differences between these two items through self-teaching and evaluating. We designed our material around Ma et al.'s design principles, which means our class session moves from exploration to induction and then to output in the classroom environment.       We initially used SKELL for the worksheet we prepared because its interface is quite friendly and understandable for students. On the first page, we asked students to look up the words must and have to themselves and find which tense they refer to. On the next page, they were expected to find which functions these expressions co...

Knock Knock... Is There Anyone Out There?

Image
Welcome back my dear readers !  I am Irem, but I like to call myself "polyglot-to-be" As I have already stated this before in one of my previous posts, here I am again to offer you a slightly different perspective and posts this year about foreign language teaching and learning either individually or in a classroom, mainly focused on English as our instructor Mustafa Polat has given us the amazing opportunity to continue this blog page.  But Irem, how is it going to happen? Let me tell you.  This year, we change our perspective to a different point than last year. We have already learned that technology is an integral part in our lives and the integration of technology into foreign language education is inevitable. Despite this fact, If you never use technology in your classroom I can guess that the students, right now they may also be called as "digital natives"  will get bored as well.  However, we will understand the important role of technology, all th...

A Goodbye Post

Hello everyone, this time it's the last post that I am writing for this term.  I had a great time doing this blog, sharing my both personal and academic experiences gave me a great joy and motivation to do my best. Not gonna lie, it was the first time I have ever attempted to do such a thing, it was scary as a shy student, but it improved many aspects of my personal development. It gave me many perspectives, different ideas and a great courage of realizing what was in my mind. Because as a language enthusiast, I love to share my knowledge, journey and hardships with people, this blog gave me a chance to actually put it into practice and I am happy to tell you that I will definitely continue sharing my experiences through different platforms! So stay tuned to catch up with the content of mine ^^  Lastly, I would like to thank our instructor Gökçe Kurt Tiftik who gave ICT course, to encourage us to do this, it was one of the best experinces I have had during my academic ...

Voice-Chat with a Chatbot !!

Hello everyone !  I am here again with an assignment I had so much fun doing it 😄  In this assignment, I had a short but a beneficial conversation with ChatGpt. I was asked to choose a particular question and my conversation with this AI started with the question "what a perfect language classroom would look like?" The chat lasted around 5 minutes and ChatGPT did not only give me the answers, but it communicated with me with follow-up questions and asked my opinions after it claimed its ideas on our topic. This was a natural and a beneficial conversation although it was not exactly like human communication. Then, I wrote a reflection paragraph about this experience and used another AI tool (ChatGPT) to correct my mistakes. The revised version avaliable with my original report, I realized how effective AI tools can be in foreign language learning and teaching.   First, talking to ChatGPT was easy and comfortable. I especially asked from it to talk to me in a na...

An Infographic, again... ^^

Hey guys!  I am here to share the updated version of my infographic. Baran helped me to revise it in a better way so I did try to change the minor mistakes. I was suggested that I should highlight the explanations a bit more and include a reference to the source I used. So I did ^^   I am leaving the infographic below, see y'all later!!

Creating A Digital Story

For our assignment, my friend Berke and I created a two-minute animated video based on the well-known starfish story. The narrative followed a young girl tossing starfish back into the sea as she saw they were washed away to the shore, even when an old man tells her she can’t possibly save them all. However, in the end, our story gently reminds us that even a small action can make a big difference with the old man participating to this small act.       Berke came up to me with the story and the script, focusing on a simple storyline with a powerful message at the end. And, I have starting creating the animation after doing the voiceover with Berke. I created the story in Storyboard That, creating 10 scenes to represent the story. I also searched for the background voices like ocean waves from Pixabay. At the end, I used CapCut to bring everything together – images, voice recordings and sound effects into a meaningful video.     ...

Collaborative Writing of A Film Review ?!

Image
Hello everyone, long time no see you !  I hope you are all doing alright. For this week's post, me and my friends were assigned to do a collaborative writing given in the ICT class. The task was quite simple but very entertaining at the same time: choose a film, watch it, and write a collaborative review that includes many aspects of the movie around 400 words. We also had to comment on each other's work and provide feedback in order to make it better.  To assign the tasks to each other, we had an online meeting with my friends. Each of us got the parts where we felt more comfortable doing so. Every of us wrote our parts in different times, but thanks to the Google docs, we were able to check each other's writing at the very moment or just follow how the writing of the paragraph was going. This (immediate feedback and observation) could be the best part of doing our assignment because we were able to communicate through just a simple document!  Working together in ...
